Die Chunking-Hypothese beinhaltet Aussagen über den Umfang der Kurzzeitgedächtnisspanne, die nach Miller 7±2 Chunks beträgt und genetisch determiniert ist. Dabei wird der spezifische Inhalt einzelner Chunks als unbedeutend für das Kurzzeitbehalten gesehen. Folglich beträgt die Gedächtnisspanne – unabhängig von Reizmaterialien wie Binärzahlen, Dezimalzahlen, Buchstaben oder Wörtern – in etwa fünf bis neun Chunks, während der Informationsgehalt (bits) dieser Materialien sehr unterschiedlich sein kann. |

| has gloss | kor: 덩이짓기(Chunking, 청킹)는 정보를 의미있는 묶음으로 만드는 것을 말한다. 인지심리학과 기억법에서는 이것이 인간의 뇌가 기억하는 방법이 장기기억과 단기기억으로 나누어 지고 특히 단기기억은 그 정보의 처리가 한계가 있음을 발견한 1956년의 조지밀러의 연구 《마법의 숫자 7±2: 인간의 정보처리능력의 한계》에서 7±2가 그 용량인 것으로 제시되었다. 이러한 용량 제한에 따라 효율적으로 인간의 뇌가 단기기억을 사용하기 위해서는 5~9 사이의 의미덩이(Chunk, 청크, 덩이)들로 만들고 기억하면 편리하다. 예를 들어 전화번호부를 보거나 외울 때 1234567890 대신 12-3456-7890 과 같이 하이픈을 사용하여 끊어서 읽어주면 훨씬 효율적이다. |
