| has gloss | fas: پیش‌گویی فرآیند برآورد در شرایط ناشناخته است. پیش‌بینی، اصطلاحی مشابه، اما عمومی‌تر است. هر دو این لغات می‌توانند به برآورد مجموعه‌های/ سری‌های زمانی (time series)، داده‌های میان‌بخشی (cross-sectional) یا وابسته به طول جغرافیایی (longitudinal) ارجاع دهند. کاربرد این لغات، میان حوزه‌های اجرایی متفاوت است: برای مثال در مبحث آب‌شناسی (hydrology)، عبارت "پیش‌گو" و "پیش‌گویی" گاهی برای برآورد ارزش‌ها در زمان‌های آیندۀ خاص به کار می‌رود، در حالی که عبارت "پیش‌بینی" برای برآوردهای عمومی‌تر، از قبیل تعداد مواردی که در طی یک دوره زمانیِ طولانی سیل اتفاق می‌افتد، استفاده می‌شود. ریسک و عدم اطمینان موضوعات مرکزی در پیش‌گویی و پیش‌بینی هستند. پیش‌گویی در کاربستِ برنامه‌ریزی تقاضای مصرف‌کننده (Customer Demand Planning) در پیش‌گوییِ تجارت روزانه برای شرکت‌های تولیدی به کار می‌رود. از قواعدِ برنامه‌ریزی تقاضا، همچنین گاهی به عنوان پشتیبانِ پیش‌گوییِ زنجیره‌ای یاد می‌شود که هم پیش‌گوییِ آماری و هم یک فرآیند توافقی را در بر می‌گیرد. پیش‌گویی معمولاً در بحثِ داده‌های سری‌های زمانی استفاده می‌شود. |
